Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa ofm, Custos of the Holy Land, presided a memorial mass to commemorate Fr. Michele Piccirillo, who entered into rest internal to the Kingdom of God, on Tuesday, November 25th 2008 at Saint Savior's Parish Church in Jerusalem.
Participated in the mass were Monsignor Antonio Franco, Apostolic Nuncio, as well as a group of bishops, priests and sisters, in addition to scientists in the field of excavations and mosaics.Fr. Pizzaballa delivered a respectful and insightful eulogy of Fr. Michaelle, God rest his soul in peace. Fr. Giovanni Bottini, Dean of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, also mentioned Fr. Michele biography and his rich life until his struggle with the disease, where he died in Italy while he was having his treatment there. The late Fr. Piccirillo mentioned in his will to be buried in the Holy Land.After the mass, condolences were accepted in the convent's hall where a 70 minute Italian film entitled "Tessere di Pace" was shown. The film was a magnificent documentary dedicated to the late Fr. Michele’s mosaic restoration work and in prospecting and exploration of the archeology of Christians in the Holy Land, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. |
