Tuesday, 13 May 2008

Happy Feast of Pentecost. May the Spirit of God fill you in this day and renew your faith in the Risen Christ.

Tuesday, 13 May 2008

During the second session of Vatican II (1963), the official Anglican, Protestant and Orthodox observers suggested to Pope Paul VI that “someone, somewhere” should establish an institute where Christian scholars and teachers, parish clergy and other church workers could experience a community life of prayer, study and dialogue. After his pilgrimage to Jerusalem in January 1964, Pope Paul decided to initiate such an institute in Jerusalem where, he said, “Christians of all communions, one yet sadly divided, find other peoples of the Book, Jews and Muslims.” The Vatican purchased the property, but an interconfessional advisory board authorizes the programs and personnel for the Tantur Ecumenical Institute for Theological Studies. The legal entity for the Institute’s properties and administration is the University of Notre Dame.

Taybeh is a small town, the only wholly Christian town in Palestine. Here we meet Catholics, Latin and Melkite, and Greek Orthodox faithful. The Latin parish is a beehive of activities, many well known even beyond the borders of the Holy Land. The preparation of ceramic peace doves, of olive oil and its derivates, the elderly home and the new youth hostel keep busy many of the people living in this small town on the hills north of Jerusalem.
